Audio: Bob Dylan Performs Classic Folk & Blues in Minnesota, May 1961 – ‘Ramblin’ Round,’ ‘Death Don’t Have No Mercy’ & More

Fifty-three years ago, in May of 1961, Bob Dylan performed somewhere in Minnesota and played a bunch of classic folk and blues songs.

His set was recorded and has been circulating as a bootleg for years.

Below is the only recording of Dylan playing the Reverend Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.”

On his website Dylan expert Olof Björner wrote:

In an interview Jaharana Romney, formerly Bonnie Beecher (interview by Markus Wittman, May 1989) talks about the song Why’d You Cut My Hair?:

“He came to my apartment and said, ‘It’s an emergency! I need your help! I gotta go home an’ see my mother!’ He was talking in the strangest Woody Guthrie-Oklahoma accent. I don’t know if she was sick, but it was an unexpected trip he had to make up to Hibbing and he wanted me to cut his hair.” He kept saying, ‘Shorter! Shorter! Get rid of the sideburns!’ So I did my very best to do what he wanted and then in the door come Dave Morton, Johnny Koerner and Harvey Abrams. They looked at him and said, ‘Oh my God, you look terrible! What did you do?’ And Dylan immediately said, ‘She did it! I told her just to trim it up a little bit but she cut it all off. I wasn’t looking in a mirror!’ And then he went and wrote that song, ‘Bonnie, why’d you cut my hair? Now I can’t go nowhere!’ He played it that night in a coffeehouse and somebody told me recently that they had been to Minnesota and somebody was still playing that song, ‘Bonnie, Why’d You Cut My Hair?’ It’s like a Minnesota classic! And so I’ve gone down in history!”

This tape may therefore come from a coffeehouse performance. The circulating tape is known as Minnesota Party Tape 1961.

Here are some of those songs.

Audio: New Peter Buck, Corin Tucker ‘Supergroup’ Debut 12 Songs at Portland’s Secret Society

Corin Tucker & Peter Buck at Secret Society in Portland. Photo via The Oregonian.

Last night super-Earth, the new band that finds Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck collaborating, performed in Portland at Secret Society, opening for Buck.

The group played 12 songs that David Greenwald of The Oregonian wrote were “so fresh, Tucker had lyric sheets.”

More from Greenwald’s review:

The occasional look to her music stand didn’t stop Tucker, still one of the best rock singers working, from commanding a room that had filled in by the time super-Earth took the stage. The new material, speedy and loud, was full of power chords, enthusiasm and the occasional signature Buck arpeggio — less punk rock than power-pop but always knife-sharp. It sounded like an album: hopefully it will be.

In addition to Buck and Tucker, super-Earth includes guitarist Scott McCaughey (Minus 5), drummer Bill Rieflin (Swans, Ministry), and guitarist Kurt Bloch (ex-Fastbacks).

The group are currently working on an album, according to the Portland Mercury.

Buck and Tucker have worked together in the past. Tucker sang on both of Buck’s solo albums.

Here are two songs on Peter Buck albums featuring Tucker:

Audio: The Complete Bob Dylan at Town Hall Concert, April 12, 1963 – Listen & See God (well, almost)

Fifty-one years ago, when Bob Dylan performed at Town Hall in New York on April 12, 1963, he blew a lot of people’s minds, and we’re still reeling from this amazing event.

I could write pages on this concert, but all you gotta do is hear it, and you’ll get it.

The concert — 23 songs plus a poem — was incredible. I’ve previously posted some of the songs, but today I’ve got the entire concert. All the songs and the poem.

This is worth your time!

Video: Bob Dylan Sings ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,’ ‘This Wheel’s On Fire’ & ‘Pancho & Lefty’

Today I found three excellent live performances by Bob Dylan.

The first is a version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” from Town Hall, Birmingham, England, May 5, 1965:

Then there’s “This Wheel’s On Fire” with Dylan joined by Rick Danko. Dylan and Danko co-wrote the song. This is from a show at Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT, August 18, 1997:

And finally a terrific cover of “Pancho & Lefty” from the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN, June 11, 2004:
