Video: Bob Dylan & The Band Open 1974 Tour with ‘Hero Blues’

Forty-one years ago, Bob Dylan and The Band opened their historic 1974 tour with “Hero Blues,” an unreleased Dylan song that he recorded in 1962 during The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions but left off the album.

The show took place at the Chicago Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.

Here are versions recorded during The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions:

Take one:

Take two:

Tale four:

Lyrics:

Yes, the gal I got
I swear she’s the screaming end
She wants me to be a hero
So she can tell all her friends

Well, she begged, she cried
She pleaded with me all last night
Well, she begged, she cried
She pleaded with me all last night
She wants me to go out
And find somebody to fight

She reads too many books
She got new movies inside her head
She reads too many books
She got movies inside her head
She wants me to walk out running
She wants me to crawl back dead

You need a different kinda man, babe
One that can grab and hold your heart
Need a different kind of man, babe
One that can hold and grab your heart
You need a different kind of man, babe
You need Napoleon Boneeparte

Well, when I’m dead
No more good times will I crave
When I’m dead
No more good times will I crave
You can stand and shout hero
All over my lonesome grave

Video: Watch Bob Dylan Play Private Mini-Concert For One Fan

In November Fredrik Wikingsson got a private Bob Dylan mini-concert at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music.

Lucky Wikingsson had been picked for an episode of a Swedish film series called “Experiment Ensam” where, according to Rolling Stone, “a lone person takes part in events that are usually reserved for large crowds.”

Dylan and his band perform a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Heartbeat,” a beautiful downbeat version of Fats Domino’s “Blueberry Hill” and Chuck Wills’ “It’s Too Late (She’s Gone).” The mini-concert ends with the blues standard, “Key to the Highway.”

Rolling Stone has a story about this here.

Live: East Bay Express Hypes Michael Goldberg/ Henry Kaiser ‘post-beat happening’

Big surprise today when I opened the latest East Bay Express and discovered that my reading Saturday with Henry Kaiser at Down Home Music is their pick for “Lectures & Lit” this week, and one of this weekend’s “Top Five Events.”

How cool is that!

I’ll read from my novel, True Love Scars, and experimental guitarist Henry Kaiser will improvise on electric guitar.

It’ll happen at 3 pm at Down Home Music, 10341 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito, CA. And it’s free, of course.

Writes Arts and Culture Editor Sarah Burke:

True Love Scars is a rock ’n’ roll novel about harboring nostalgia for the 1960s, getting lost in a drugged-up dream-world, finding love, and then losing it tragically.

Audio/ Video: Listen To Bob Dylan’s 2001 LP “Love And Theft” As Performed Live

On September 11, 2001, 13 years ago, Bob Dylan released “Love And Theft,” his 31st studio album.

The album followed the acclaimed Daniel Lanois/ Dylan produced Time Out Of Mind, and established that Dylan was back in the saddle, writing new, amazing songs and making tremendously good albums. After it came Modern Times, which some critics looked at as the third of a trilogy of superb albums.

Dylan sees it differently, at least he did when he spoke to Jonathan Lethem in 2006.

Time Out of Mind was me getting back in and fighting my way out of the corner. But by the time I made “Love And Theft,” I was out of the corner. On this record, I ain’t nowhere, you can’t find me anywhere, because I’m way gone from the corner. I would think more of “Love And Theft” as the beginning of a trilogy, if there’s going to be a trilogy. If I decide I want to go back into the studio.

It turns out that Dylan has performed every song on the album life.

Here is a live version of the album I put together.

Enjoy.
