Audio: Bob Dylan’s ’50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1′ – Freewheelin’ Rarities, Part Three

In 2012, in order to protect the copyrights on a bunch of Bob Dylan recordings that have not been officially released, Sony released a very limited edition of a multi-disk set called The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1.

Among the gems on the album are many outtakes and alternate takes of songs recorded for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

I previously posted clips from the set here and here.

Today I’ve got more.

Enjoy while you can.

Audio: ‘The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’ Released 51 Years Ago – May 27, 1963 – ‘Masters of War,’ ‘(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle’ & More

Fifty-one years ago, on May 27, 1963, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, an album that Dylan had worked on, on and off, for over a year, was released.

The recording of the album began on April 24, 1962 and ended on April 24, 1963. There were sessions on eight different days at Columbia Studio A in New York. At least 36 songs were recorded.

Thirteen songs made it onto the album.

Here are some of the outtakes that I like along with some faves from the official release:

Outtake from the photo session for the album cover.

Fifty-two years ago, on April 24, 1962, Bob Dylan entered Columbia Studio A in New York and began recording his second album, the album that would become The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

That day he recorded versions of “I’m Going to New Orleans,” “Sally Gal,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Willie,” Corrina, Corrina,” “The Death of Emmett Till,” “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues” and “(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle” according to Clinton Heylin’s “Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions [1960 – 1994].”

Here are versions of the songs he cut that day. Some may have been cut at later sessions as in some cases he recorded the same song at more than one session.

Audio: Bob Dylan Plays Gerde’s Folk City, April 16, 1962 – ‘Corrina, Corrina,’ ‘Deep Ellum Blues’ & More

Fifty-two years ago, Bob Dylan appeared at Gerde’s Folk City. He’d been playing there since 1961 when, on April 11, he played Gerde’s for the first time.

What’s important about the April 16, 1962 gig is that some of it was recorded, and the recordings are tremendous. They’re great in and of themselves, but it’s also fascinating to get another earful of an artist in transition. And with Bob Dylan, he’s always in transition.

These songs appeared on an official album released by Sony two years ago. They’re on the The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1. Of course that was released as a very limited edition so that Sony could prevent the recordings from entering the public domain in Europe.

Anyway, enjoy.

Bob Dylan began recording his second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, at Columbia Studio A in New York on April 24, 1962.

He spent an entire year, off an on, writing and recording, completing work on the album on April 24, 1963.

Quite a change from the time spent on his debut, Bob Dylan, which was recorded in two days.

There were eight sessions in all for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, and most of the songs that ended up on the album were written by Dylan, again a marked change from the first one, which was nearly all covers.

Here are some of the songs and versions that didn’t make the official album.
