Audio/Video: Bob Dylan/ Mick Taylor Play ‘Every Grain of Sand,’ Paris, 1984 + ‘All Along the Watchtower,’ ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ & More

Colin Allen, Ian McLagan, Greg Sutton, Bob Dylan & Mick Taylor, 1984.

Bob Dylan with Mick Taylor on lead guitar performing “Every Grain of Sand” at Parc de Sceaux, Paris, France on July 1, 1984.

And the solo on this next one is amazing!

“All Along The Watchtower,” Arena di Verona, Verona, Italy, May 29,1984:

This next sequence is beautifully filmed. It starts with an interview, then cuts to Dylan and band with Mick Taylor on stage at Arena di Verona on May 28 or 29, 1984 doing “Like A Rolling Stone” followed by an acoustic version of “Blowin’ in the Wind” with Mick Taylor on acoustic as well.

“Jokerman,” Arena di Verona, Verona, Italy, May 28, 1984 (audio is distorted):

By the way you might want to check out the “True Love Scars” soundtrack playlist here. It’s the music that goes with the first two chapters of my novel.

Audio: Bob Dylan Plays Gerde’s Folk City, April 16, 1962 – ‘Corrina, Corrina,’ ‘Deep Ellum Blues’ & More

Fifty-two years ago, Bob Dylan appeared at Gerde’s Folk City. He’d been playing there since 1961 when, on April 11, he played Gerde’s for the first time.

What’s important about the April 16, 1962 gig is that some of it was recorded, and the recordings are tremendous. They’re great in and of themselves, but it’s also fascinating to get another earful of an artist in transition. And with Bob Dylan, he’s always in transition.

These songs appeared on an official album released by Sony two years ago. They’re on the The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection, Volume 1. Of course that was released as a very limited edition so that Sony could prevent the recordings from entering the public domain in Europe.

Anyway, enjoy.

Video: Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Ron Wood at Live Aid 1985; Dylan: ‘We couldn’t hear anything’

Dylan at Live Aid.

In theory, Bob Dylan performing with Keith Richards and Ron Wood at Live Aid in 1985 should have been a home run.

One could imagine Richards and Wood adding ragged harmony vocals, and each supplying wiry guitar solos.

Oh but that was not to be. Instead they’re like the two stooges, floundering and posing while Dylan does his best to deliver three of his classics.

Looking at these clips now, I’m surprised at how good Dylan sounds. Despite his loaded buddies, he pulls this three-song set off, even dealing with a busted string.

Ron Wood, Dylan and Keith Richards at Live Aid.

That night there was a private party inside the second floor suite at the Palace Hotel in Philadelphia. I was reporting a cover story on Live Aid for Rolling Stone (August 15, 1985 issue) and managed to get into the party, which was attended by Dylan, Wood and Richards, as well as Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Stephen Stills, former Temptations Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin, Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, Jack Nicholson, Neil Young, Miami Vice‘s Don Johnson and others.

I asked Richards what it was like for him to play with Dylan.

“Well it’s not the first time,” he said.

“It’s the first time you’ve played together in public,” I said.

“Yeah, first time before a paying audience. Course we didn’t get paid.” He laughed, and joked, “Would have been better if we’d gotten paid.”

I went up to Dylan and asked if he’d had fun on stage.

“Fun?” he said. “No, we couldn’t hear anything. We had fun rehearsing.”

“Ballad of Hollis Brown”:

“When the Ship Comes In”:

“Blowin’ in the Wind”:

Plus here’s Dylan at the Willie Nelson Tribute Birthday Party, May 1993, singing “Hard Times”:

Neil Young’s ‘A Letter Home’ Now Set For ‘Likely’ Spring Release

20140312-185757.jpg

Neil Young’s next album, A Letter Home, has been pushed back to a ‘likely’ spring release, Young told Billboard Originally, back in January, Young told Rolling Stone the album would be out in March.

As I first reported, the album is a collaboration between Young and Jack White. It was recorded at White’s Third Man studio in Nashville, is being released on Third Man Records and features Jack White on two tracks.

“It’s not ready for prime time yet. It’s not really a release yet, but it’s a very unique record,” Young said. “It’s like a time capsule. It doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard that was made recently. And some great songs, some beautiful music.”

“They’re songs that I love, songs that changed my life, songs that made it so that I understood what someone else was saying to me, songs by greater writers.”

Although Young has not revealed which songs will be on the album, I have speculated that it will include many of the covers Young performed at Farm Aid last year and at his recent acoustic shows in New York and Canada such as Bert Jansch’s “Needle of Death,” Phil Ochs “Changes,” Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Since I Met You Baby” and Tim Hardin’s “Reason to Believe.”

Young also told Billboard that his forthcoming memoir will be called “Special Deluxe.”

He told Billboard it’s a book that focuses on his love of cars.

“So it’s a history through automobiles, and it’s a history of automobiles and it’s a history of the environmental impact of automobiles. And it’s a projection into the future of automobiles. It has its own agenda that develops over the book.

Young also said he’s working on new music, and would like to do an album with a full orchestra, live, recorded mono with one mic.

“I want to do something like that where we really record what happened, with one point of view and the musicians moved closer and farther away, the way it was done in the past. To me that’s a challenge and it’s a sound that’s unbelievable, and you can’t get it any other way. So I’m into doing that.”
