Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Tolokonnikova “Missing” For 20 Days

pussy-riot-628

Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been out of contact with her family and her lawyer for 20 days, according to Tolokonnikova’s husband, Pyotr Verzilov.

The location of Tolokonnikova remains a mystery. She was removed from Penal Colony No. 14 in Mordovia on October 21, and has been inaccessible to her family and legal representatives ever since.

Russia’s Federal Penal Service (FSIN) said in a statement released to Interfax Friday that Tolokonnikoca is still on her way to a new penal colony. Inerfax is a Moscow-based non-governmental news agency.

In the statement, the FSIN claims that Tolokonnikova is in satisfactory health and that “no complaints have come from her.”

“May we reiterate that,” the FSIN statement said, “under Article 17 of the Penalty Enforcement Code of the Russian Federation, the administration of [the penal colony] will notify only one relative of the convict (to be chosen by the latter) about her arrival at the institution, and will do so no later than within 10 days of her arrival.”

Amnesty International has demanded that Russian authorities immediately disclose where they are holding Tolokonnikova.

Last Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2013) Verzilov told Rolling Stone that his wife was being transferred to a prison in the city of Krasnoyarsk, 2,600 miles east of Moscow, in the heart of Siberia.

“It’s 100 percent that it’s Krasnoyarsk region,” Verzilov told Rolling Stone during a phone interview. The information came from a source in Russia’s prison administration, Verzilov said.

Verzilov said he believed his wife was headed for Colony 50, near the town of Nizhny Ingash, which is 190 miles from the city of Krasnoyarsk. This prison is in a much more remote location than Penal Colony No. 14.

On Thursday however, The Daily Beast called the prison and was told Tolokonnikova was not there. “An unindentified woman at the prison, who answered The Daily Beast’s phone call, told reporters that ‘Tolokonnikova is not being kept at #50,’ The Daily Beast reported.

Watch & Listen: Bob Dylan Sounds Damn Good In Milan, Italy

Bob Dylan and his superb band arrived in Milan, Italy for three shows — November 2, 3 and 4, 2013. Here are six songs from the Nov. 3rd show. Dylan sounds pretty good and his band is excellent.

I’ve got to warn you that there’s almost no light on the stage. You can hear the songs but can’t see much.

I’ve also included a version of “Desolation Row” from a 2011 show in Milan. I think he’s singing better now than two years ago.

Bidder For Banksy’s “The banality of the banality of evil” Backs Out

The man who used the tag “gorpetri” to make the winning bid of $615,000 for the painting Banksy modified and retitled, “The banality of the banality of evil,” reneged on his bid once the auction was over, according to the New York Times.

What happened next has caused some controversy in New York. Rachel Hirschfeld, an art collector whose bid of $614,800 was right behind the gorpetri bid, said she got a call on Nov. 1 from an auction official about the painting, the Times reports.

“She said, ‘You win the Banksy,’ ” Ms. Hirschfeld told the Times. “I said, ‘Why? Somebody bid more than me.’ She said, ‘He’s out.’ ”

Hirschfeld didn’t think it fair to pay the full price since she’d been bidding against an insincere bidder — obviously, in retrospect, gorpetri’s bids were not genuine. “Every bid that he made has to be out,” Hirschfeld told the Times.

Ultimately another bidder got the painting, but the auction house won’t reveal the new selling price. However, it was over $400,000, according to Hirschfeld, who told the Times she offered $400,000 and lost out to a higher offer.

Is Damien Hirst Bankrolling Banksy?

Street art by Banksy.

Is twelve million dollar sharp-man Damien Hirst funding Banksy? That’s what Daily Beast writer Lizzie Crocker theorizes today.

Crocker writes:

Despite this ostensible aversion to personal fame and publicity, Banksy agreed to be featured in Hirst’s 2006 show at the Serpentine Gallery in London, “In the darkest hour there may be light.” Speaking to The Guardian about Banksy’s work, Hirst praised the pseudonymous graffiti artist. “I’ve always thought he was great. The streets are boring…anyone like Banksy who makes it entertaining and treats people like people instead of consumers is brilliant.”

It was the beginning of a collaboration that has fueled rumors about Banksy’s identity and associations—particularly amongst those who speculate that “Banksy” is in fact a sort of performance art collective funded by art world mandarins.

Banksy’s $200,000 Graffiti Balloon Confiscated By NYC Police

For his final piece of street art in NYC, Banksy attached a huge balloon that said “Banksy!” to the side of an abandoned building on OCtober 31, 2013.

Three men tried to remove the balloon from the building that same day and were arrested. Police have confiscated the balloon piece, which an art dealer told the New York Times is worth between $200,000 and $300,000.

Police deflated the balloon which is currently being stored on the third floor of the Police Department’s building on Pearson Place in Long Island City, a police spokeswoman told the New York Times.

“I don’t have it as art on the invoice,” Deputy Chief Jack J. Trabitz told the New York Times. “We have it as a balloon.”

Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Tolokonnikova Headed For Siberian Prison

pussy-riot-628

Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Tolokonnikova is being transferred to a prison in the city of Krasnoyarsk, 2,600 miles east of Moscow, in the heart of Siberia, according to her husband, Peter Verzilov.

“It’s 100 percent that it’s Krasnoyarsk region,” Verzilov told Rolling Stone during a phone interview. The information came from a source in Russia’s prison administration, Verzilov said.

Tolokonnikova’s husband believes his wife is headed for Colony 50, near the town of Nizhny Ingash, which is 190 miles from the city of Krasnoyarsk. This prison is in a much more remote location than Penal Colony No 14 in Mordovia, where Tolokonnikova was previously held.

“I think it could be a kind of revenge for what she has done,” Pavel Chikov, a rights defender and a close advisor to Tolokonnikova told Rolling Stone. “It will definitely cause a lot of trouble — it’s definitely not the most convenient place in the Russian Federation.”

Tolokonnikova has not been seen since October 20th when she disappeared from Colony 14.

On Sunday the Russian prison service told Interfax news agency that Tolokonnikova has been moved to another prison. This is the third prison that the Pussy Riot member has been in.

The Federal Penitentiary Service also said that Tolokonnikova’s family would be notified within ten days of her arrival at the new prison, per “regulations.”

The front page of today’s New York Times Arts & Leisure section includes a wonderful overview of the artist Art Spiegelman, who is best know for his graphic novel, “Maus.”

“It’s a landmark, the greatest graphic novel ever drawn,” Chris Ware tells the Times. “What makes it so special is not just the comics, not just the Holocaust, but that it’s an incredibly good, human book.”

A retrospective of Spiegelman’s work opens at the Jewish Museum in Manhattan on Nov. 8, 2013.
