R.E.M. will release on November 24 a 6-DVD set that features all of the group’s live performances on MTV dating back to 1991 – plus lots of outtakes.
I’m an R.E.M. fan from way back, you know, “Radio Free Europe” days.
While I never cared much for MTV, I was always glad to see R.E.M. videos there, and they gave R.E.M. a lot of coverage.
So it’s very cool that, finally, all of MTV’s R.E.M. coverage will be available. So much good stuff!!!
Check out two live performances — “Everybody Hurts” and “Drive” — from the 1993 MTV Video Awards.
The set will also include a brand new documentary, “R.E.M. By MTV,” put together by MTV using archival footage. According to R.E.M.’s website, “Drawing exclusively on archival events, the film traces R.E.M. and MTV in real time, which makes it feel as exciting and immediate as it did when it was happening.”
This is what’s in the set:

Fifty-two years ago, on October 15, 1962, an unknown Bob Dylan performed 17 songs at the Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village, New York.
His performance was recorded and has circulated on bootlegs since the early ’70s.
Some of these songs were officially released on a CD, Live at The Gaslight 1962, in 2005. A couple others made it onto other official Dylan CDs. And some have not yet been officially released.
Here are all 17 of the songs, including the ones that have not yet been officially released.

The War On Drugs have caught the ire of Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek recently but we don’t have to go there.
Rather, we can listen to the version of “Tangled Up In Blue” they performed at Minnesota’s 89.3.
The group is led by singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel and includes David Hartley (bass, guitar), Robbie Bennett (keyboards, guitar) and Patrick Berkery (drums).
They’re from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
You’ll find The War On Drugs’ “Tangles Up In Blue” here.

Brian Eno, who curates the new Fela Anikulakpo Kuti box set, says Fela’s music changed his life:
“Before about mid-September 1973 I didn’t have much interest in polyrhythmic music. I didn’t really get it. That all changed one autumn day when I walked into Stern’s Record Shop off Tottenham Court Road. For reasons I’ve long forgotten, I left the store with an album that was to change my life dramatically. It was Afrodisiac by Fela Ransome-Kuti (as he was then known) and his band The Africa 70. I remember the first time I listened and how dazzled I was by the groove and the rhythmic complexity, and by the raw, harsh sounds of the brass, like Mack trucks hurtling across highways with their horns blaring. Everything I thought I knew about music at that point was up in the air again. The sheer force and drive of this wild Nigerian stuff blew my mind. My friend Robert Wyatt called it ‘Jazz from another planet’ – and suddenly I thought I understood the point of jazz, until then an almost alien music to me.”
Fela has been called the “Bob Dylan of Africa.”
Maybe his music will change your life too!
Check out this live version of the late African musical legend’s “Colonial Mentality,” recorded at the New Afrika Shine in Fela’s hometown of Lagos. The track features Femi Kuti on sax.
Below is a player loaded with an interview with Alex Gibney who directed the new film “Finding Fela,” the live recording of “Colonial Mentality,” “Lover,” “Power Show” and “Zombie” from FELA! Original Broadway Cast.
