Watch & Listen: Bob Dylan Copyrights ‘Billy’ 41 Years Ago

Forty-one years ago, on December 18, 1972, Bob Dylan’s main theme for the film “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” was copyrighted, according to “The Bob Dylan Copyright Files 1962-2007” by Tim Dunn.

Four versions of the song appeared on the soundtrack for the film, two of which were instrumentals and two with lyrics.

The lyrics that were copyrighted and which appear in the songbook, “The Songs of Bob Dylan: From 1966 Through 1975” are not exactly the same as the lyrics Bob sings for “Billy 4” and “Billy 7.” It seems he improvised each time he sang the song, changing words, and choosing which verses to include.

Bob was also an actor in the film, which was directed by Sam Peckinpah and released in 1973.

You can check out a version of the lyrics to “Billy” here.

Lou Reed’s Last Words

Yesterday I posted more than 20 videos from the memorial that was held for Lou Reed Monday night.

You can watch them all here.

I didn’t have time to watch them all myself, but in today’s New York Times, Jon Pareles singled out the moment during the memorial when Laurie Anderson shared Lou Reed’s final words.

Mr. Reed’s last words, Ms. Anderson said, were “Take me out into the light.”

It’s such a beautiful line and it drove home to me that Lou Reed was such an incredible poet.

The Velvet Underground albums are filled with not only great songs, but those songs contain so many deep lines. Lou Reed understood human nature, and he articulated it so well.

Patti Smith performed “Perfect Day,” and she said the reason was that it contains “Lou’s most poignant lyric,” “You made me forget myself/ I thought I was someone else, someone good.”

Watch: Arcade Fire Sing ‘Little Drummer Boy’

Arcade Fire sang “Little Drummer Boy” on Zach Galifianakis’ “Between Two Ferns” show. The musical performance begins two minutes, 23 seconds into the clip but you might want to watch the whole thing. Zach Galifianakis’ conversation with Samuel L. Jackson and Tobey Maguire is damn funny.

Back in March La Luz dropped this video for their terrific ‘girl group’ homage, “Call Me in the Day.”

I was listening to “Call Me in the Day” earlier today and thought you might wanna listen too.

The album, La Luz, is one of the year’s best.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, currently serving a two-year prison sentence, could be freed by the end of the week under a new amnesty, their lawyer said today.

Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, unanimously approved the amnesty proposed by Russian President Putin on the first of three required readings today

“According to the draft law passed today, my clients will be freed,” lawyer Irina Khrunova said in a phone interview with Bloomberg News.
