Watch & Listen: Bob Dylan Live at the Royal Albert Hall 2013

Two clips from Bob Dylan’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, November 26, 2013. This is not the greatest video or audio, but it gives you an idea of what it was like. “All ALong the Watchtower” sounds pretty great.

Three Unpublished J. D. Salinger Stories Leak Online

Photo via The Guardian.

Three short stories written by the late J. D. Salinger found their way online following an eBay auction of a bootlet book titled “Three Stories.”

The stories are “Paula,” “Birthday Boy,” and “The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls.”

Supposed cover of bootleg Salinger book.

At the Reddit website, there is an intense discussion about the situation. This is apparently what the person who leaked the stories had to say:

It took me many weeks of research to find that this book existed and many more weeks to acquire it. I will confirm and take with that take responsibility to the claim that these are accurate to the originals.

Not much is verifiable to the origins of this book I have here. At least I will not confirm anything. What I do know is that someone with access to the originals compiled them together in this self-published collection. There is a single UPC symbol on the back that leads no where. Other than that, it’s existence is not well documented.
Enjoy.

The book “Three Stories” seems to be a copy of a collection originally released in 1999. An eBay who sold a first edition of this collection said the following:

Ebay Seller seymourstainglass wrote:
Paperback. 47 pages. On Copyright page it says printed in London in 1999. Copy number 6 of 25.
3 short stories written by JD Salinger never published at all and that remain in The Ransom Center of the University of Texas at Austin Untitled or “Paula” (1941)

The untitled manuscript at the Ransom Center is less a story than a series of scenes not yet sewn together. Whether or not this is some form of Salinger’s lost story “Paula” is pure speculation. However, in a letter dated October 31 (1941), Salinger states that he is “finishing a horror story (my first and last) called ‘Mrs. Hincher.’ ” Undoubtedly a reference to the story described here, Salinger’s letter dates its completion to late 1941 or early 1942.

“The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls” is largely regarded as the finest of Salinger’s unpublished works. While not having had the opportunity to revue all of the author’s unpublished materials, it is hard to imagine a more important work among them
“Birthday Boy” (1946?)

The short story “Birthday Boy” is accompanied by a letter from Salinger to John Woodburn which refers to “both sets of proofs”. Although undated, the letter probably dates to 1951, the year that Woodburn published The Catcher in the Rye. However, it’s also likely that the letter does not reference Catcher, but a short story sent to placate the editor instead. Salinger’s relationship with Woodburn was brief and somewhat bizarre.

John Fogerty Drops $8,950,000 on New House

Rock legend John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame, has purchased a 20-plus acre estate in Thousand Oaks, California, for $8.9 million, the Real Estalker reports.

Fogerty apparently bought the Hidden Valley estate in May 2013 under the name of a trust that also owns his Beverly Hills mansion, a property that he was reportedly trying to sell this summer for $23.5 million.

His new home has huge irrigated fields and a 22,000 gallon cistern. The main residence is 13,053 square feet, and there’s a swimming pool, spa, 12-car garage and a private water well.

Black Flag Singer Ron Reyes Fired: “You’re done, party’s over get off…”

Photo via Pitchfork.

In a Facebook post reprinted below, Ron Reyes, an early Black Flag singer (he’s on the “Jealous Again” EP) who was brought back by Greg Ginn for the latest incarnation of the pivotal American hardcore punk combo, recounts how he was fired from the group last Saturday night.

Reyes writes that skateboarder Mike Vallely, who sang with the band at a 2003 reunion show “comes on stage stares me down, takes my mic and says ‘You’re done, party’s over get off it’s over…’

“The writing was on the wall,” Reyes continues, “since before we played our first show. So many things went wrong from the start. I was into things like having a good drummer, rehearsing and spending time on things like beginnings and endings of songs, being a little less distracted with tour life and a little more on the ball. You know things that would make our efforts worthy of the name Black Flag…”

Listen: Lou Reed Talks About Bob Dylan

In February 2012 Lou Reed appeared at the Kelly Writers House at the University of Pennsylvania and was interviewed by Rolling Stone’s Anthony deCurtis.

It’s short but interesting, particularly the end where Reed talks about the difference between Dylan’s songwriting and his own. Use the “more” link on the player for other clips including Reed talking about Andy Warhol and Laurie Anderson.

Watch: The National’s Subversive “Gravy Boat” Video

Check the subliminal messaging in this image of the sailors lying on the turkey in a sea of gravy in the shape of a “v” for vegan.

The National have made a Thanksgiving video for “Bob’s Burgers,” the animated TV show.

The group has done a remake of “Gravy Boat,” putting a dark, possibly vegan spin on it.

In the video, a group of sailors sing the ode to gravy, now turned into a dour funeral march, including the daft chorus, “Sailors in your mouth,” and are ultimately eaten by the Belcher family, equating the eating of animals with the eating of humans.

Check the video here.

Other vegan news this week: Former Vice-President Al Gore has gone vegan joining former President Bill Clinton.

And Morrissey offered a full-bore rant against President Obama for the annual turkey pardon, which Morrissey calls “Thankskilling.”

On the Morrissey fan site True To You he writes:

Thankskilling

Thankskilling

Please ignore the abysmal example set by President Obama who, in the name of Thanksgiving, supports torture as 45 million birds are horrifically abused; dragged through electrified stun baths, and then have their throats slit. And President Obama laughs. Haha, so funny!
As Ingrid Newkirk from PETA points out, turkey ‘meat’ is one of “our nation’s top killers”, causing heart-attacks and strokes in humans due to saturated animal fats and cholesterol. And President Obama laughs.
Further, the meat industry is responsible for 51% of human-caused greenhouse-gas emission, therefore the embarrassingly stupid White House ‘turkey pardon’ is open support for a viciously cruel and environmentally irresponsible industry.
And President Obama laughs.

Springsteen’s Handwritten “Born To Run” Lyrics Reveal Song Revisions

A notebook page on which Bruce Springsteen worked on his trademark song, “Born To Run,” is going up for auction at Sotheby’s and is valued between $70,000 and $100,000.

The page reveals that the song didn’t come fully formed onto the page. Rather, much of the original lyric was reworked.

Early version of “Born To Run.”

Check out a larger version of the notebook page here.

Here’s a line that didn’t make it:

They live in fury chasin’ the bad kind of fools glory down a killer’s highway into mainlined [scribbled word] of the sun.

Here are some lines that in revamped form did:

I looked out cross my hood + saw the highway buckle neath the wheels of a gold Chevy 6.

I was headin for the place were good girls die in the arms of wild angels in one last kiss.

There’s also this alternative version of that last line:

I was headin for the place where wild angels die in an everlasting or neverending kiss.

If this is of interest, there’s an article in the New York Times to check out.

Here’s the released version:
